What does it mean to be a design & build firm?

In short: alongside our construction services our team is also equipped to design cabinet elevations and walk clients through the process of selecting finish materials like hardwood floor, tile, stone, paint colors, lighting, plumbing fixtures, appliances, and so on. The long-winded version: Michael & Betty started out as a contractor & designer duo, which has allowed the business to evolve as such as they’ve built a reputation around quality and a clean, organic aesthetic. Though our team loves getting to guide folks through the creative process of home building, we also embrace collaboration and welcome the opportunity to work with other designers on our projects. We’re here to support our clients in whatever capacity they choose.

How long does the new build process take?

To be candid, this is one of our least favorite questions to answer, and it’s worth noting that the scope of a project and its complexities can greatly impact project duration. It also depends on whether our clients come to us with an approved set of plans or if they’re just starting the process of finding the right property to invest in. If you have a specific timeline question, feel free to send us a note and we’ll do our best to offer more tailored insight!

How did you get started in this industry?

Michael’s career in development began early on in his 20’s — an inherent entrepreneurial mindset and natural draw to Southern California’s real estate market made this path well-suited. He & Betty built their first spec home together on Lido Isle in the early 2000’s. The Cape Cod-inspired aesthetic that Betty harnessed from her East Coast upbringing coupled with Michael’s attention to detail in building a quality product provided a solid spring board for the two to dive into another project after closing escrow. Once they got a few more specs under their belt and developed a signature style they started getting inquiries to build homes for others. Their business has been built on hard work and a network of amazing individuals — from their team of subcontractors (many of whom have been with them since their first build), to their client base, to the realtors they trust to represent their work once they reach the finish line.

What is the average price to build per square foot?

The nature of building high-end custom homes makes this question difficult to answer without more specifics on project scope. The price to build per square foot can vary drastically depending on inflation of materials, desired finishes, any extensive engineering needed for the property, and varying amenities we often include in our homes (elevator, pool & spa, dirty kitchen, etc.).
